Children who are 12 to 24 months old are very active and very curious. During this time their sensory-motor development matures and they being walking, climbing, riding cars and other toys without pedals, and dancing. They also begin playing with puzzles, blocks, stacking toys, lacing materials, and using crayons. Toddlers become more independent, "I DO IT!" "THAT'S MINE!" are often heard as they learn to interact with others and begin to test limits.

At ABC the play areas are divided into a quiet area with books, areas for dramatic play, manipulatives (blocks, puzzles, stacking toys), art/music area, and an area for large motor activities (exercise, riding toys). Also provided is an outdoor area with swings, climbing structures and an area for sand play.

Finger painting, sorting shapes, or color toys, matching cards, telling flannel board stories, reciting nursery rhymes, singing songs, and expressing feelings through music and puppetry help children develop self-esteem, independence and positive attitudes. Many of these activities also help to develop sensory-motor skills.
